Every Singapore vehicle registration number (VRN) consists of a prefix (letters followed by numbers) and a single suffix letter. This suffix letter is called the checksum — an official character calculated using the LTA's algorithm to validate the registration number.
The checksum helps prevent errors and fraud by ensuring that the VRN follows the correct format. When you renew road tax, apply for COE, or transfer vehicle ownership, the full VRN including the checksum is required.
The checksum is derived from the alphanumeric prefix through a specific mathematical formula:
Simply enter your VRN prefix (e.g., SBA1234, SLS567, SMZ8888) and this tool instantly computes the correct checksum letter for you.
Singapore car plates follow a structured format. Here's what you need to know:
Note: The checksum is an official part of your VRN and appears on your vehicle's licence plate.
Full VRN including checksum is required for LTA transactions
Accurate registration number needed for COE applications
Ensure correct VRN when buying or selling a used car
